- ProsVery good photo quality. Low claimed cost per page. Automatic duplexer. Prints from multiple sources.
- ConsLackluster speed for business applications. Scan-to-e-mail function may be problematic.
- Bottom LineThe Kodak ESP 7250 All-in-One Printer has some home-office features, but its real strength is in its photo printing.
Recent Kodak multifunction printers (MFPs) we've tested, such as the ESP 5250 ($149 direct, ), have combined a mix of home and home-office features. The Kodak ESP 7250 All-in-One Printer ($199.99 direct) continues that tradition, though in this particularly model, it clearly leans toward the home side. Solid text quality and an automatic duplexer give it some business cred, but not enough to recommend it for anything but the lightest business use. Photo printing is where the 7250 really shines, both in terms of output quality and the features it delivers.

As an MFP, the ESP 7250 prints, scans, and copies, both connected to a computer and as a standalone device. It has no fax capabilities. In addition to being able to print from a computer, it can print JPEGs from a PictBridge-enabled camera, a USB key, or a memory card (it supports most standard formats). It can also print directly from a WiFi-enabled BlackBerry or from an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with Kodak's Pic Flick app. (You can also print from any Bluetooth device with an optional $49.99 Bluetooth interface.) The 7250's tilt-up front panel has a 2.4-inch color LCD that can be used for navigating the simple menu system or selecting photos for printing out.

It can scan to JPEG, .rtf, or PDF format. But although the 7250 is supposed to be able to scan to the default e-mail client on one's PC, either from the printer's front panel or from the computer itself, I couldn't get it to scan a file to Outlook 2003 by either method, though Kodak claims it supports that version of Outlook. (I was able to scan to Outlook 2007, though.) As of this writing Kodak says it is looking into the issue. A simple solution is to save your scan to file, launch your e-mail program, and attach the file. Still, it's annoying to encounter a feature that didn't work as advertised.
The 7250 has a general-purpose tray that can hold 100 sheets of legal- or letter-size (or smaller) paper. Built into that tray is a second photo tray that can hold 40 sheets of photo paper at sizes of up to 5-by-7. The photo paper tray is a nice touch, but the 100-sheet main tray is on the small side if you're thinking of enlisting the printer for home-office duty. (If you print 20 pages a day, you'll be adding paper at least one a week.) The automatic duplexer is a nice addition, letting you print on both sides of a sheet of paper.
Kodak claims a very low cost per printed page. Based on the company's ink prices and claimed cartridge yield, ink costs come to about 2.2 cents per page for a monochrome page and 6.5 cents per color page, which is among the lowest we've encountered.
Setup and Performance
Setup for this 7.4- by 17.5- by 17-inch, 18.7-pound printer was routine for an inkjet and involved installing the software on your PC, powering up the printer, inserting the printhead followed by two ink cartridges (black and color), connecting it to the PC (in our case, via Ethernet cable), and following some simple instructions. It can also be connected via WiFi, or to a non-networked computer over a USB cable. We used a PC running 32-bit Windows Vista, though Kodak says that it comes with a full set of drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista and Windows 7, Win XP, and Mac OS X 10.4.8 and above.

I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at a total of 15 minutes 9 seconds. That's sluggish compared with the Epson WorkForce 610 ($199.99 direct, ), which scored a blistering 8:29. It lagged the Editors' Choice HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One ($299 direct, ), which finished in 12:38, and the ESP 5250, which scored 13:58, though the 7250 is by no means the slowest inkjet AIO we've seen.
The 7250's photo speed averaged a respectable 1 minute 6 seconds for a 4-by-6 print and 1:48 per 8.5-by-11 print. That's no match for the 5250, which scored 36 seconds and 1:09, respectively, but it held its own against the HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One (1:07 and 2:27) , and sailed past the WorkForce 610 (2:06 and 4:42). For photo printing, speed is less important than quality, and that's one area where the 7250 shone.
Quality
The 7250's photo quality is on a par with the best inkjet MFPs we've tested, better than photo-kiosk prints though a bit below professional quality. We only noted two issues, in both cases mild enough that they're unlikely to be of concern to the vast majority of consumers. A monochrome photo had a very slight tint, and another print showed a touch of aliasing, a tendency for straight lines—such as the spokes on a bicycle wheel—to have slightly jagged edges.

The photos proved scratch resistant, and were water resistant—once the ink was dry, at least. When we applied water to recently printed photos, the ink ran a bit, so you wouldn't want to handle fresh prints, especially if your hands were sweaty. The photos should last a long time—Kodak claims a lifetime of 120 years for prints in dark storage (as in an album), and 100 years either framed under glass or exposed to air.
Although the 7250's text isn't as crisp as you'd get from a laser printer, it's above average for an inkjet MFP. The majority of fonts were both well formed and easily readable at 6 points, with none needing more than 10 points to meet both these standards. Unless you have an unusual need for tiny fonts, the text should be adequate for most any standard use.
Graphics quality was on a par with the vast majority of inkjets. One issue worth mention was banding—faint vertical lines of less-dense color on an otherwise solid background. This problem only appeared in draft mode, though. Graphics in high-quality mode are suitable not only for internal business use but also for handouts and brochures. You'll also want to print graphics-heavy documents on heavier-weight paper, as pages with full-page graphics tended to curl in our testing.
The Kodak ESP 5250, though cheaper by $50, can't match the 7250's photo quality and lacks features such as an auto-duplexer, dedicated photo tray, and the ability to print from PictBridge cameras or USB keys. For $299, the HP Premium Fax all-in-one prints terrific photos and graphics; its 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) and marginally larger (125-sheet) main photo tray make it more suitable as a dual-use MFP for home and home office than the 7250. The $200 Epson Workforce 610 also prints excellent photos (though it does so very slowly), and has a wealth of home-office features including fax and ADF.

If photo quality is a major factor in your selection of an MFP, the Kodak ESP 7250 is well worth considering. It could fill the role of a home printer, but its lack of fax capability and an automatic document feeder (ADF), as well as its relatively small main paper tray, limit its home-office usability to very light duty. Its low claimed cost per page is a nice plus. It outputs beautiful prints, and can print from multiple sources, even when not connected to a computer. That, and solid text and graphics printing, should make it a worthy addition to many households.
